Moyes’ motley crew continue their winning run against record-chasers Liverpool in a five-goal thriller.

The Hammers held on to earn a 3-2 victory over a strong Liverpool side that were chasing history. The Reds were searching for a record 26th unbeaten game, but came undone against Moyes’ East London outfit.

On the Scotsman’s 1001st game in football management, he clinched a victory over Liverpool at the ninth time of asking. Sunday’s win sees West Ham rise to third in the league, three points off the top of the table.

As the Last Post rung out around a silent London Stadium, the roar following the minutes remembrance was a sign of the fiery atmosphere that would carry the Irons to a famed victory. The Hammers wouldn’t have to wait long as Pablo Fornals’ corner looped over a flapping Alisson and in.

A VAR check ensued but Angelo Ogbonna’s interference was judged as minimal, much to the disbelief of Jurgen Klopp. His bemusement would continue when Aaron Cresswell evaded a card when his follow-through found Jordan Henderson’s knee.

The German said: “we have the problem with the ‘clear and obvious mistake’ because whoever is then there in the VAR hides behind that phrase. Then we have two people hiding and in the end we have the wrong decision.”

The man involved in the Irons’ opener would be substituted halfway through the first half with a knee injury. Following later scans, the Italian has done damage to his anterior cruciate ligament and could miss the rest of the season. He was replaced by Craig Dawson.

Liverpool would find a way back into the game just before the stroke of half-time. Trent Alexander-Arnold converted an edge-of-the-box free-kick into the postage stamp past a hopeless Lukasz Fabianksi.

West Ham would regain the lead 20 minutes into the second period when Mane was dispossed well into the Hammers’ own-half. Bowen bursted through the chasing Liverpool pack and thread into the path of Fornals. Calm and composed, his finish wormed past Alisson to rapturous scenes.

Moyes’ side would find success through a corner again as Bowen’s deep delivery made connection with a roaming Kurt Zouma to score his first West Ham goal and one against his old foes.

Substitute, Divock Origi gave Klopp hope as his smart finish brought the Reds back into the game making it 3-2. He expertly controlled the ball on his left and struck home on the turn for first his goal of the season.

Despite a late chance for Mane to level it up, the Irons remained resolute and earn their fourth straight win. West Ham venture into the international break in fine form, whilst Liverpool lose grip on the title race.
